Coffee: noun. A delicious drink that can be consumed at any time of day; a sweet nectar from the gods gifted upon mankind; the only source of energy a college student will need. Forget sleep — just get yourself a cup of coffee and you’re good to go.

No matter where you go to school, there are sure to be some great local or chain java joints located near your campus. For students attending college in Atlanta, I’ve done the research for you and compiled a list (in no particular order) of seven great coffee places you should definitely try.

1. Dancing Goats Coffee Bar. First of all, who wouldn’t want to get a cup of joe at a place with a name like Dancing Goats? Not only is the name itself cool, but the shop in the Old Fourth Ward is a great place to hang while you inhale your drink.

You can either sit inside at the bar or a table or head outside to the patio which is somewhat covered so it’s an option even in cooler weather and they’ve got lounge chairs, rocking chairs, and hanging couch rockers outdoors. The coffee itself is from Batdorf and Bronson, and there’s plenty of other yummy treats to get yourself to accompany your coffee.

2. HodgePodge Coffeehouse and Gallery. Also serving Batdorf and Bronson coffee drinks, this cool shop is homey and serves sandwiches and treats baked from scratch. The shop is also full of local art and other handmade goods for sale, so it’s a unique spot to grab a cup of joe. Additionally, they host open-mic nights once a month — so you can get your coffee on while showing off your pipes.

3. Octane Coffee/Bar. With several locations around Atlanta, Octane should be on your must-drink coffee list — as well as your list of cool bars to hit. That’s right — not only can you grab a coffee at Octane, but they serve alcohol, too.

Octane operates on a local level, roasting their beans right next to the cafe and buying their milk from a nearby dairy. Their location at Grant Park shares the space with the Little Tart Bakeshop so you’ve got a great selection of pastries to pair with your drinks.

4. Press & Grind. With a long menu sure to have whatever your coffee-loving heart will enjoy, Press & Grind should earn a spot on your coffee bucket list. Besides drinks, their menu features lots of yummy treats everyone can enjoy — from vegan to pescatarian to paleo to carnivore and you can sit inside or outside to enjoy your coffee and sandwich or baked good.

5. Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee House. With a recently opened shop in Atlantic Station, Land of a Thousand Hills is a great addition to Atlanta’s coffee scene. Serving single origin Rwandan coffee along with handcrafted espresso drinks and yummy breakfast and lunch options, this is a perfect place to go any time of day.

Land of a Thousand Hills literally refers to Rwanda, and they source their coffee from the country to help alleviate poverty; their motto is “Drink Coffee, Do Good” so you’ll feel good about buying your coffee and other items there.

You can sit at a table or the high top bar and enjoy your treats and soak up the ambiance while you chat with the baristas, meet your friends, or do some work.

6. Condesa Coffee. Located in cool buildings in the Old Fourth Ward and Sweet Auburn communities, Condesa boasts both amazing coffee and cocktails. Their shop in the Old Fourth Ward overlooks the Freedom Parkway Bike Trail and gives you a great view of the city.

Their coffee comes from Counter Culture Coffee and Condesa is passionate about quality, so your coffee, food, or alcoholic beverage is sure to be excellent.

7. Amelie’s French Bakery. With a location now in Atlanta, you can get your coffee on or stop for breakfast or lunch at Amelie’s, located in West Midtown near Georgia Tech. They’ve got a wide variety of pastries, sandwiches, soups, salads, and desserts, in addition to their signature Magnolia Coffee Co. roasted coffee.

With an interesting interior, friendly atmosphere and staff, and eclectic French vibe, you’ll thoroughly enjoy your experience at Amelie’s. It’s the perfect place to grab a cup of joe by yourself, hang with friends, go on a date, or use as a workspace since it has a blend of different sized tables and chairs and couches.

Other great coffee places in Atlanta that you should check out are Chattanhoochee Coffee Company, Cafe Intermezzo, West Egg Cafe, Inman Perk, Corso Coffee, and Joe’s.

Basically, if you’re a college student in Atlanta with a love of coffee, you’re in good shape and should probably start planning your coffee pilgrimage around the city so you can hit all these amazing places and get yourself lots of delicious and vital nectar from the gods.
