When you decorate your apartment or house, it’s important that you do it in a way that’s true to you so it feels like the space is truly yours. That’s why you’ll want to go about decorating based on your personality — so your place will really reflect you.

Here are some decorating ideas to consider based on your personality type.

If You’re An Extravert: As an extravert, you probably like to entertain and be around people — so you should keep that in mind when you decorate your apartment or house. You’ll want to make sure you have space for entertaining, with places to sit and a more open layout. Investing in more couches, chairs, or a bigger table will probably be worthwhile as you’ll likely have people over often and will want to have where to sit, set up food, etc.

As far as artwork and decorating, go with bold, bright, fun patterns and colors that make the place feel homey and cheerful and choose artwork that is interesting, quirky, personal, or conversation-starters. Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns and textures or pair metals and woods, and create a place that’s reflective of your personality and comfortable to hang out in.

If You’re An Introvert: Introverts tend to really value their downtime and need a place where they can just chill, so when you’re decorating, make sure to choose items that really speak to you. Consider creating a place just for you where you can relax, like a reading nook or retreat space.

If you’re really into sewing, arts and crafts, or some other hobby, set up an area in your room or home dedicated to your interest where you can get away from everything, be creative, and indulge in whatever you’re passionate about. As far as artwork and decorating, look for inspirational quotes or canvases, soothing but fun tones, and hang personal photos or art to really make your space feel like it’s yours.

If You’re A Packrat: Have trouble throwing things out, have a lot of books, or brought a collection with you to school? You’ll want to consider functional storage and lots of shelving when you’re decorating your home. Hollow ottomans with storage space inside, using risers to create more room for storage under your bed or lofting your bed, are options that will give you more room to store things without making your apartment or home look messy.

You can also put in different kinds of shelving in your rooms to display items, like books, vases, kitchenware, or knick knacks, and use other more discreet storage areas to put things that won’t add anything to your decor but that you want to have in your home. Be logical and efficient when thinking about the layout of your rooms and maximize your space so your things don’t feel like they’re dominating the room.

If You’re A Minimalist: Don’t like a lot of things lying around or crowding a room? You can still decorate and make the space your own without having to put too much stuff up or invest in a ton of furniture. Instead, pick comfortable, functional, and classic pieces to furnish your apartment or house, and choose things that speak to you.

If you have a favorite color or pattern, use that when possible in pillows, rugs, and other decor. Going more contemporary in style may give you the minimalist feel and look you’re hoping for, with straight lines and fewer colors. That being said, don’t be afraid to show some personality and display a few personal items to make the place feel like home.

If You’re A Matcher: Do you like everything to be very put together and favor a more professional look? No problem — just approach decorating the same way you would picking out an outfit. Choose items with the same patterns or colors or pick a theme for each room and run with that so each space has a cohesive feel and look.

Don’t feel like you need to mix and match to show your creativity and personality — pick a color and/or pattern for each room and stay within that palette when choosing items to decorate. Your space should bring you joy and reflect your personality, so only invest in items that make you happy.

If You’re A Free Spirit: When decorating your apartment or house, just choose whatever you like, whatever speaks to you, whatever moves you. Pick things you’ll like having around you and that make your space feel like home while showing who you are.

Try to choose pieces that you’ll like long-term, though you can always redecorate when the mood strikes you by being smart about it so you don’t break the bank. If you know you’ll want to change things up, try to pick furniture or art that will be easy to reuse or repurpose; for instance, you can paint dressers or tables, recover a couch, or put a new photo print into your already hanging frame.

So as you go about decorating your dorm, apartment, or house, keep these decorating ideas in mind and you’ll be on your way to creating a personalized space just for you that will show who you are and feel like home.
