"100 Layers Of" Side Effects

By Jordan Williams on August 22, 2016

Cinnamon challenge, salt and ice challenge and more. Viral challenges have reached large platforms time after time again.

Out of all of the viral challenges that have received the Internet’s attention, the “100 Layers” challenge stands out. So, just like the cinnamon challenge, it is worth learning how it came to be and any possible side effects.

To start here is how this came to be. The One Hundred Coats/Layers challenge started when YouTube vlogger Simply Nailogical decided to put 100 coats of nail polish on her finger nails in an effort to reach #PolishMountain.

Incidentally, her nails did look like a mountain of nail polish and made other YouTube vloggers in the beauty space curious. This curiosity is what sparked the spin-offs: 100 layers of lipstick, 100 layers of foundation and 100 pumps of conditioner for natural hair.

Then, of course, there were “100 layers of” challenges that had nothing to do with beauty, but it was very clear that the general idea was catching on.

In order to explore the possible side effects of challenges like this, it is first important to understand when too much can be bad. The best way to explore this is by looking at the “100 pumps of conditioner” challenge.

“100 pumps of conditioner” was created by curly hair vlogger JewJew Bee who started the challenge because she wanted to create a “100 layers” challenge for natural hair. For the challenge, she washed her hair with a shampoo, applied the Aussie Moist “Mega Moist” conditioner, and left it in her hair to dry overnight.

As the challenge caught on, many women would claim that their attempt was a fail while others say it was the best. These results are not surprising because there are many different types of curls, and no two are the same.

However, one similarity amongst them is the worrying of over-conditioning the hair. This challenge with the other “100 layers of” challenges seem to waste the product as well.

Then, there are the effects on the skin and body. The interest in hair products and cosmetics that are natural stem from the idea that a lot of the toxins from cosmetics we use get absorbed throughout the bloodstream.

Whether or not this is really the case has constantly been up for debate, but the simple fear has caused natural cosmetic lines to soar. So, one can only imagine what putting on 100 layers of foundation can do to your skin.

Viral challenges with serious health and safety risks have caught the Internet’s attention like clockwork. The next time one occurs, it is important to understand that some should not be attempted.
